The new Permanent Representative of Peru to the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Chuquihuara, today affirmed Peru is a fully-fledged and sovereign democracy.

“I want to affirm that Peru is a fully-fledged democracy, a sovereign democracy. On Sunday, we Peruvians are going to exercise our right to vote and the people’s will shall be respected,” the Peruvian Ambassador pointed out.

Remarks were made in Washington D.C. where he presented to the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, the credentials that accredit him to the hemispheric institution.

Almagro noted the participation of the OAS in the democratic process of Peru over the past years through its OAS Electoral Observation Missions (OAS/EOMs).

He said an EOM has been deployed in the country to observe April 10 elections and agreed with Permanent Representative of Peru that Peruvians will express their sovereign decision on Sunday.

“We respect the Peruvian people’s will in the following elections,” the OAS Secretary General said.

Almagro recognized the important experience of the new Peruvian representative to the OAS and the role he will play within the framework of the Organization, in particular in the preparations for the Summit of the Americas in 2018, which will be hosted by the South American country.

Ambassador Chuquihuara emphasized that his country has managed to harmonize its development efforts around three major axes: democratic governance, economic freedom and social cohesion."

On the matter, he recalled the changes that our country has undergone in the past years, which has resulted in unprecedented economic growth, significant poverty reduction and democratic consolidation.

The diplomat stressed the active role of the Peruvian foreign policy in the hemispheric arena, which resulted in the adoption of an Inter-American Democratic Charter in 2001.

Both Almagro and Chuquihuara held a private meeting at the institution’s headquarters before the aforementioned ceremony.
