Peru’s President Ollanta Humala said the "great transformation" —he promised Peruvians as candidate while on the campaign trail prior to 2011 general elections— is taking place during his administration by governing for the poorest Peruvians, those who in the past "were standing at the end of the line."
The Head of State said "the great transformation I promised was based on creating opportunities for poorest Peruvians."
"What we, as government officials, currently do is to govern for 30 million Peruvians prioritizing poorest citizens, the ones who used to stand at the end of the line," Mr. Humala told after reaffirming he has fought against incredulity in this sense.
The President went on to add road- and virtual connectivity to be the administration's legacy for Ayacucho city.
At the beginning of his term, only 31.5% of the country's highways were paved, whereas 70% of today's roads did not either exist or were precarious, he reminded.
In this sense, he noted Ayacucho —where Peru's independence was consolidated in 1824— moves towards a 100% connectivity rate.
President Humala participated on Friday in the ceremony marking the inauguration of the concluded improvement works on the Mayocc-Huanta highway.
The 27.54 kilometer-long roadway entailed an investment worth S/.137,707,284 million (about US$40.984 million). 76,214 inhabitants are expected to benefit from this government-funded project.
The Head of State was joined by Transport and Communications Minister Jose Gallardo Ku, among other local authorities.
