To the rhythm of music and dance, the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin in Cusco received on Wednesday afternoon the images of virgins and saints participating in the Feast of Corpus Christi.
The “entrance” began at 18:00 p.m. local time (23:00 GMT), when the image of Saint Jerome and Saint Sebastian left their districts –bearing the same names– located 5 and 7 kilometers, respectively, southeast of Cusco’s Main Square.
The parade that ran the most is that of Saint Barbara, since carriers brought it on foot from Poroy district, located over 12 kilometers away. The rest of the effigies came from temples and churches near the Cathedral; for instance La Inmaculada Concepcion (Immaculate Conception), known as La Linda, awaited them in the Cathedral.
The effigies gathered along Santa Clara and Hospital streets; after that the parade continued down Marques street, and then proceeded to La Merced square, Mantas street and finally main square. Devotees were offered to taste Chiriuchu, a Cusco’s festive dish, and some beverages whilst waiting.
The “alferados” or sponsors, known in Cusco as “carguyoq”, regaled guests, carriers, musicians, dancers, neighbors, as well as children and teenagers, who carried tables and benches to sit the images on.
