The economic growth and strong social policies uphold the reduction of poverty rate to less than half between 2000 and 2013, which allowed achieving one of the Millennium’s development goals, the director of the Central Reserve Bank (BCR) Gustavo Yamada affirmed.

Yamada also indicated the poverty rate was reduced from 55% in 2000 to 23.9% in 2013.

"This is due to the economic growth reached during consecutive governments and to a higher strengthening of social policies. In this sense, Peru is one of the countries that has fulfilled the famous millennium target two years in advance, whereas it was set to be met by 2015," he declared to official station TV Peru.

This means during the last decades, our country has advanced considerably, and during the current administration "it has continued making progress, which is very good for all Peruvians," he highlighted.

Yamada reminded there were doubts about "whether economic growth and social policies were enough to reduce poverty substantially."

"We used to think this was an ambition, an illusion, and it was not realistic. Ten years ago, when we looked at the numbers, we used to think how difficult it was, but the real data proves, in a country growing at an annual average of 5% to 6%, it is possible to reduce poverty considerably," he told.

"After assessing some of the researches, we can determine almost three quarters of this poverty reduction rate are the result of the boosted economic growth. However, one quarter of the rate responds to social policies applied in the poorest sectors," the director of the Central Reserve Bank stated.

The Millennium Development Goals are eight objectives for reaching human development, which the 189 member States of the United Nations agreed to achieve by 2015. Those were set in 2000.

These goals are associated to overcoming problems of the every-day life.
