Peru to allocate US$33.2 million to assist indigenous people

Peru’s Health Ministry will allocate S/.100 million (about US$ 33.2 million) to assist indigenous population this year through the Comprehensive Health Insurance (SIS) across San Martin, Loreto, Ucayali and Amazonas regions.

According to Cesar Chaname, Peru’s Health Insurance Deputy Minister, his sector will also finance the gas required to transport patients, medicine, and samples to health care centers throughout the Valley of the Apurimac and Ene River (VRAE) and Datem del Marañon.

During his presentation, he informed a US$3.3 million budget has been set for assisted air transportation of patients from indigenous communities.   

We are negotiating the advance payment of a four-month period at the primary health-care level for those living in Vrae and a Datem del Marañon,” he added.

In terms of investment, Chaname assured priority has been given to 16 intermediate-level hospitals in San Nicolas, Bagua, Bagua Grande, Nieva, Condorcanqui, Jaen, Chanchamayo, Pichanaqui, Satipo, Pangoa, Iquitos, Yurimaguas, Iberia, Oxapampa, Tocache and Rioja.
