Peru shows "great commitment" to face climate change by organizing the World Climate Summit and by playing a significant role in the negotiations, said the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Representative, Maria Luisa Silva.
She said Peru has made an ambitious and brave commitment by offering itself to be the host and venue of COP20.
She also said Peru’s biggest challenges in assuming the Presidency of COP20 is to lead the negotiations at an international level and to encourage the Parties’ participation and awareness on climate change.
"We have to guarantee this will not only mobilize negotiators, but the communities, civil society, private sector participants and indigenous people," she added.
"The Environment Ministry, the government institutions and the United Nations have worked hard to get the place ready on time and prepared for COP20. These are cutting-edge facilities, they are perfect and good enough to meet negotiators’ needs," she noted.
