Lima, Peru will be hosting the IX Inter-American Electoral Authorities Meeting of the organization of the Organization of American States (OAS) on November 24 and 25, bringing 28 participants of 22 countries of the hemisphere together.
The event is designed to discuss the organization of elections and to exchange best practices across OAS Member States.
Organized together with the National Elections Jury (JNE) and the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) of Peru, the meeting seeks to strengthen the institutional capacity of electoral bodies, as well as to improve the organization of elections in the Americas.
While in there, representatives of the electoral institutions will address the following topics: governmental intervention in elections, quality management in electoral processes and challenges to electoral institutionalism.
The opening session will see the participation of the General Secretariat Chief of Cabinet Hugo de Zela, in representation of the Secretary General, José Miguel de Insulza; the Permanent Representative of Peru to the OAS, Juan Federico Jiménez Mayor; and representatives of the electoral authorities of the country.
To date, eight Inter-American Electoral Authorities Meetings have been held. The last ones were celebrated between 2007 and 2012.
The said meetings promoted the cooperation between the institutions and contributed to establishing specific initiatives for the strengthening of the electoral authorities and more transparent and participative elections.
Run with the support of the Canadian Government as well, the event will take place at Hotel Pardo Double Tree in Miraflores district.
The opening session of the event will be open to the press.
