The recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, Rajendra Pachauri, will give two keynote speeches on global warming today in Lima, Peru, as part of the activities prior to the 20th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP20).

Pachauri, chairperson of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change-IPCC, has presided over the “Media Training Workshop in Preparation for the COP20,” aimed at national and international media.

The objective of the workshop was to provide up-to-date information about climate change in the region, as well as about the different negotiating forums surrounding the COP20/CMP10, to a group of journalists from Latin America and the Caribbean.

The training also provided tools to the media professionals to raise awareness on how a universal climate change agreement can contribute to greening the economic growth of developing countries and improving their ability to cope with the impacts of climate change.

Later in the afternoon, the Indian speaker will be delivering a keynote speech entitled “La Ciencia del Cambio Climático: Conocimiento para la Acción” (The Science of Climate Change: Knowledge for Action).

The whole conference, scheduled for 15:15 local time (20:15 GMT) will be broadcast live on http://www.ustream.tv/channel/pnudperu

These events will allow the Nobel Prize laureate show the real impact of climate change and how urgent the negotiation at COP20 turns out to be.
