The tourist sector in Peru is set to record an annual average growth of 6.1 percent over the next 10-year period, thus surpassing the average growth rate of 4 percent for the region, according to latest estimates from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).

WTTC’s President, David Scowsill, highlighted that the favorable conditions of the booming expansion of the middle class in Peru and along Latin America and the Caribbean fuels the dynamism of the tourism industry among the nations which form part of the region.

“Growth perspectives in Latin America are mainly positive. Therefore, the region should prepare for the reception of a greater number of potential visitors,” Scowsill said in statements to Andina news agency.

In this regard, the top WTTC official went on to underline that the surge of the tourism sector as economic activity in the region created directly and indirectly nearly 17 million jobs, 1.1 million of which are headquartered in Peru.

Meanwhile, the Peruvian Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister, Magali Silva, stressed the tourist sector in Peru is expected to be growing steadily in the next ten years, thus playing increasing role in the expansion of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) and accounting for largest percentage of the economy.

“In order to ensure a greater flow of foreign travelers coming to Peru, it will be essential to further develop large-scale infrastructure able to meet their requirements,” the senior Ollanta Humala administration official said.

Scowsill confirmed that world leading keynote speakers from the industry will address the ongoing World Travel & Tourism Council 2014 Americas Summit, taking place from 10th to 11th September in the Peruvian capital Lima.

“The regional summit will reaffirm the position of the capital Lima as a hub in the region of major international events,” the WTTC’s top noted.
