Peruvian President Ollanta Humala congratulated the girls youth national volleyball team at his office on Wednesday for winning the South American title and thus qualifying to the 2013 FIVB World Championship in Thailand.
The president met with coach Natalia Malaga for one hour and promised her that he will push for the swift completion of new volleyball facilities in Lima.
"We asked the president to help us with the construction of the [Volleyball Training] Coliseum which is almost finished, and he said he will talk with the people of IPD [Peruvian Sports Institute] who are in charge of this issue," said the former star player.
"All national teams can train in these facilities. We can have training courts, a gym and resting and dining areas all in one place. I think that's a big step for the development of the players," she added.
Already dubbed the new Matadorcitas (The little spikers) by local media, Peru beat Brazil 3-2 in a close championship game in front of more than 3,000 fans. This is the first time Peru have won the title in 32 years.
