Xi Jinping: Chancay Megaport has opened a new land-sea channel in Latin America

Chinese President Xi Jinping inaugurated on Tuesday the 4th Ministerial Meeting of the China-CELAC Forum. At this event, he highlighted the deepening of practical cooperation in trade, investment, finance, science-technology, and infrastructure development with Latin America and the Caribbean.

In this regard, during his address, the Chinese leader highlighted the inauguration of the Chancay Port, a project he inaugurated together with President Dina Boluarte during his most recent visit to Peru in 2024.

"Satellite cooperation between China and Latin America has become a model of South-South cooperation in the field of high technology, and the successful opening of the Chancay Megaport in Peru has opened the new land-sea channel in Latin America," he stated.

The Chinese president recalled that free trade agreements have been signed with Chile, Peru, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and other countries.

Likewise, he noted that trade volume between China and Latin America exceeded US$500 billion for the first time last year —40 times more than at the beginning of this century.

China's top official stated that they have deepened their cooperation in line with the broader trend of economic globalization.

"The two sides have implemented more than 200 infrastructure construction projects under the high-quality joint development of the Belt and Road Initiative, creating millions of jobs," he said.

Similarly, the Chinese leader noted that active cooperation is underway in disaster prevention, mitigation, and relief, with joint efforts to respond to natural events such as hurricanes and earthquakes.

Furthermore, President Xi Jinping underscored that China and Latin America & the Caribbean practice true multilateralism, jointly defend international fairness and justice, foster the global governance system reform, as well as advocate for a multipolar world and the democratization of international relations.

He also emphasized that the facts have shown that these regions have become a community with a shared future, working hand in hand with a clear foundation of mutual respect as equals, in addition to being a driving force for mutual benefit.

Moreover, the Chinese president emphasized that only through unity and cooperation can countries maintain global peace and stability, as well as foster development and prosperity on a global scale.

At another point, he stated that China is willing to work with Latin America and the Caribbean to launch five major projects, jointly seek development and revitalization, in addition to building a community with a shared future.
"China will always be a good friend and partner to the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. Let us unite, move forward together in our respective journeys of modernization, and write a new chapter together in building a community with a shared future between China and Latin America and the Caribbean," Mr. Xi concluded.
