The World Boxing Association (WBA) on Friday presented Peruvian interim light flyweight world champion Alberto Rossel with a mini WBA belt in recognition of his achievements in the ring.
On the fifth and last day of the 92nd annual WBA convention in Lima, Rossel addressed the audience and thanked the association for having their convention in Peru, allowing the boxing world to experience "the warmth and culture of this beautiful country."
Rossel also expressed his gratitude for the WBA recognizing his tenacity and allowing him to be the first male champion from Peru.
The 38-year-old fighter, who retained his title after beating Mexican Jose Zúñiga late last month, received the award from the hands of WBA president Gilberto Mendoza.
Peruvian promoter Jorge Bartra was also presented with a mini WBA belt by WBA executive director Gilberto Jesus Mendoza Jr., who then reviewed the accomplishments made through the week’s meetings.
One of the highlights of the event was the presence of many champions including Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini and his 30-year reunion with Peruvian rival Orlando Romero, Fightnews.com reported.
