highlighted his upcoming visit to Lima and said that efforts are being synchronized to protect the hemisphere from various threats, receiving Peru into the Shield of the Americas.
Through an opinion column published Tuesday in the newspaper El Comercio, he stated that this week he will travel to Barranquilla (Colombia), Quito (Ecuador), and Lima (Peru) to "highlight a clear, actionable commitment on behalf of President Donald Trump and the American people: the United States delivers."
Rubio said this fulfillment is reflected in security, as well as prosperity and economic development.
Moreover, he emphasized that the alternative they provide is better than those offered by other countries because U.S. companies and business leaders invest directly in national economies, developing the local workforce and supporting surrounding communities.
"We are partnering directly with Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru to build real security, facilitate economic growth, and ensure that our region's future remains in the sovereign control of each country," Rubio stated.
Relations with Peru
In the case of Peru, Rubio noted that they have great expectations for working with President Keiko Fujimori's Government to project the 200 years of bilateral relations with our country into the future.
"We're synchronizing efforts to secure our hemisphere against transnational and regional threats by welcoming Peru, now a Major non-NATO ally, into the Shield of the Americas," he noted.
In that regard, the U.S. Secretary of State indicated that the partnership between the two nations is built on the basis of transparent, high-value investments in key strategic sectors.
"Following the signing of our Memorandum of Understanding on Critical Minerals in February 2026, the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) directly allocated US$5 million to Peru's mining sector, generating tax revenues and local jobs in said country," the senior Trump administration official emphasized.
"Where Chinese Communist Party-backed projects challenge Peru's legal frameworks and threaten data security and transparency, the United States' private sector is delivering open, market-driven investments that preserve Peruvian ownership and protect our hemisphere's security interests," he added.
Marco Rubio will leave today for Barranquilla to meet with Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella.
He will then travel to Quito to meet with Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa and, finally, arrive in Lima.
