The U.S. Embassy in Peru today welcomed the election of Robert Prevost as Supreme Pontiff, who chose the name Leo XIV for his pontificate.
"We welcome the appointment of the new Pope Leo XIV. A celebration for Catholics around the world, and a joy especially shared between the American people and the Peruvian people," read a message posted on the embassy's official account on the social network X.
It also highlighted his time in Peru, where he performed pastoral service for more than 20 years.
"From Chicago to Chiclayo," the U.S. Embassy emphasized.
Robert Prevost, 69, became Pope Francis' successor this Thursday and the first American and Peruvian pontiff in history.

The 267th Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church was born in Chicago, but he also holds Peruvian nationality, where he served as a missionary and as Archbishop Emeritus of Chiclayo.
Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti, made the announcement of the new pope before thousands of people gathered in Saint Peter’s Square at the Vatican.
