The U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), together with the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Section (INL) at the U.S. Embassy in Peru, held a conference in Peru to improve cross-border cooperation in the fight against human trafficking in the region, the U.S. Embassy has reported.

The event lasted three days and took place in the Peruvian jungle city of Iquitos, in the region of Loreto.

Moreover, it saw the participation of five HSI experts in human trafficking and sex tourism, as well as police members and prosecutors from Peru, Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador.

"HSI is dedicated to the global fight against human trafficking. Our goal is to break up and dismantle transnational criminal organizations that profit by exploiting the most vulnerable," said HSI Lima Assistant Attaché Paul Salamon.

"Behind every statistic there is a face, a name, and a story. Every human trafficking victim is a person with dreams, hopes, and aspirations," INL director Glenn Tosten remarked.

"Our duty is not only to rescue and protect these people, but also to restore their dignity, heal their wounds, and empower them to rebuild their lives," he added.

The conference concluded with the agreement that this conference will become an annual event, in order to strengthen the fight against human trafficking through continued international cooperation.
