UN emphasizes concern over possible dismissal of Peru's National Justice Board members

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN Human Rights) on Tuesday expressed concern about the possible removal of Peru's National Justice Board (JNJ) members.

Via its social media, the aforementioned UN body reiterated its "serious concerns over actions that risk affecting the JNJ independence."

The message also states that "the JNJ is a central actor in ensuring judicial independence, the separation of powers, and the rule of law."

"In view of the upcoming vote in Congress on the removal of members of the National Justice Board, we reiterate our serious concerns over actions that risk affecting its Independence," it stated.


Parliament

A Congress plenary session is scheduled to be held on March 6-7, following an agenda that includes the final report on the constitutional accusation against JNJ members.

According to the document, they are accused of having allegedly committed serious misconduct in the fulfillment of their duties.

It also proposes the disqualification for 10 years of all JNJ members from the exercise of public office.

About the JNJ

The National Justice Board (JNJ) is in charge of appointing, evaluating, confirming, and sanctioning judges, prosecutors, national control authorities of the Public Ministry and the Judiciary, as well as the heads of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) and the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (RENIEC).
