Two Peruvian eateries named among top 10 in the world

13:20 | Singapore (Singapore), Jun. 25.

Renowned Peruvian restaurants 'Central' and 'Maido' have been named among the top 10 in the world at The World's 50 Best Restaurant Awards, known as the Oscars of the fine dining world.

Central —owned by chef Virgilio Martinez— ranks sixth and has been named the Best Restaurant in South America in the Continental Restaurant Awards 2019.

"Chefs Virgilio Martinez and Pia Leon's flagship restaurant is a shrine to everything that is Peruvian, including many ingredients that are seldom served elsewhere. The husband-and-wife team have been travelling the length and breadth of the country for several years to source interesting and unique produce from land, sea and mountains," reads the website's description.

Meanwhile, Maido —by chef Mitsuharu 'Micha' Tsumura— occupies the 10th place of the list. This Nikkei restaurant was voted The Best Restaurant in Latin America in both 2017 and 2018.

"When Peru meets Japan on the plate, Nikkei is born –and chef Mitsuharu 'Micha' Tsumura is the Nikkei king. This translates to a welcoming spot where fresh fish and citrus-packed sauces reign supreme," The World's 50 Best Restaurants said.

The latest edition of The World's 50 Best Restaurants took place in Singapore on Tuesday 25th June 2019, and Mirazur —an eatery in Menton (France) led by Argentina-born Mauro Colagreco— was named the best restaurant in the globe.

The top ten (listed from first to tenth place) includes Mirazur (France), Noma (Denmark), Asador Etxebarri (Spain), Gaggan (Thailand), Geranium (Denmark), Central (Peru), Mugaritz (Spain), Arpége (France), Disfrutar (Spain), and Maido (Peru).
