Two million Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines land in Peru

09:20 | Lima, Sep. 5.

A batch of two million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from Sinopharm laboratory has arrived in Peru to speed up the vaccination of the population.

"Tonight (on Saturday evening), Deputy Public Health Minister Gustavo Rosell and Deputy Benefits-Health Insurance Minister Bernardo Ostos supervised the arrival of two million COVID-19 vaccines," the Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported via Twitter.

"These jabs will help close gaps in regions and cover new age groups to protect more Peruvian nationals from the third wave," it added.

Speaking from Jorge Chavez International Airport, Rosell underlined that over 13 million COVID-19 vaccines will arrive in Peru in September.

"We will receive more than 13 million doses this month. It all started on Thursday (September 2), when the country received 35,000 AstraZeneca doses; 662,220 Pfizer doses landed on Friday (September 3); and we received two million Sinopharm doses today to contribute to the vaccination drive," he said.

For his part, Ostos stated that the health measures adopted by Minsa are intended to minimize the impact of a possible third wave of infections.

"Our aim is to make equal progress in all regions," the deputy minister pointed out.

Likewise, the high-ranking officials affirmed that 14 million people are expected to be fully vaccinated with two doses by the end of September.
