Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Juan Carlos Mathews on Tuesday highlighted the economic impact generated by international productions in filming locations, as is the case of the
"Transformers" movie, which generated over US$10 million in revenues for Peru, through trips, accommodation, staff, and premises, during the filming process in 2021.
"Today, through the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), we confirmed the establishment of an Executive Bureau to promote Peru as a destination for filming locations. It will serve to assess the necessary improvements and changes so that major production companies can see Peru as a suitable destination for shooting their films," the minister said.
In this regard, the government official emphasized that the diversity of landscapes, natural areas, cultures, and biodiversity offered by Peru, turn the country into a great destination for the realization of major film productions.
Therefore, the establishment of an Executive Bureau on this topic will help create space for coordination and management to place Peru among the main filming locations in the world, he added.
To date, "
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" is included in the historical ranking of the
top 3 most-watched movies in Peru and is the most-watched movie so far this year, with more than 3.2 million viewers.
In its opening weekend, "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" grossed US$170.5 million at the worldwide box office.
Overcoming difficulties
"We will address all difficulties that international production companies face when filming in Peru. We have welcomed productions such as 'La Reina del Sur' and 'Transformers,' and now, a few scenes of the new 'Paddington' movie will be shot, too. Peru is becoming an attractive destination, and we have to improve it," the minister added.
Ministerial Resolution No. 255-2023-EF/10 authorizes the establishment of the Bureau to address, identify, promote, and propose measures to make Peru an attractive destination for international production companies, as well as to benefit and motivate those who are interested in the country as a destination for filming locations, with the aim of contributing to Peru's economic growth.
