The Netherlands launches circular economy project to enhance coffee value chain in Peru

21:54 | Lima, Nov. 1.

The Netherlands has officially launched the project "Circular Coffee: creating value through the chain," based on a private-public alliance that seeks to scale up circular practices in the entire coffee value chain in Peru, passing from production on the farm (sowing and harvesting), through processing (from parchment coffee to green coffee), to export and roasting procedures in the Netherlands.

The 4-year action plan (2019-2023), valued at 3 million euros, was formulated during the event. 50% of the project is financed with the support of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) and the remaining 50% by funds from a consortium based on a private public-alliance formed by the organization Solidaridad, JDE (the second largest coffee roaster in the world), OLAM Peru, Cooperativa Cuencas del Huallaga and SERFOR, which represents the Peruvian Government.

The project will benefit 1,600 producers, under a deforestation-free gender and family farming approach in San Martin region. The coffee from Peruvian coffee growers will be acquired by JDE, and the coffee waste from coffee shops will be collected in order to be used as input for the generation of furniture construction panels.

Dutch Ambassador Nathalie Lintvelt congratulated Peru for starting to take concrete actions to introduce the circular economy into national politics and for taking steps to implement it progressively.

"The embassy supports this initiative. We have been building up joint proposals with the Environment and Production Ministries to create the circular Peru platform and support the transition to circular economy in the industrial sector," she said.

One of the proposals for joint work between Peru and the Netherlands includes facilitating the exchange of experience between both countries in close collaboration with the Delegation of the European Union to Peru.

Likewise, actions have been identified to support the introduction of the Circular Economy within the framework of the industrial circular economy roadmap led by the Peruvian Ministry of Production.

With Peru's Ministry of Environment as focal point, the Netherlands will support the design and implementation of the road map for the Circular Peru Platform, which will be the meeting point between the public-private and the technological innovation and knowledge organization sectors.
