On October 29, cinemas across the country will premiere “The Painter of Miracles” (“El Pintor de los Milagros”), a Peruvian production that, for the first time on the big screen, recounts the story of the man who conceived the image of the Lord of Miracles—a symbol of faith, identity, and hope for millions of Peruvians and catholic people around the world.
The film’s plot centers on Francisco, a journalist whose life is transformed when he begins investigating the origins of the miraculous mural.
His search leads him to uncover the story of a young man enslaved in the 17th century—known only as “The Painter”—who, despite suffering and oppression, found in art a form of resistance. This act would transcend history, eventually becoming one of the world’s most significant religious symbols.
More than just a religious film, “The Painter of Miracles” is a historical human drama that explores universal themes such as freedom, dignity, hope, and the transformative power of faith.
The film seeks to bring to light a little-known story that is part of the nation’s cultural heritage, while highlighting the Afro-descendant legacy in the formation of Peru’s national identity.
The production is supported by the Brotherhood of the Lord of Miracles of the Nazarenas (Hermandad del Señor de los Milagros de las Nazarenas), the Afro-Peruvian Caucus of the Congress of the Republic, and the Society of Audiovisual Artists (IAP)—institutions that recognize the historical, cultural, and social value of this work.
“The Painter of Miracles” invites audiences to discover the origins of one of Peru’s most important religious and cultural symbols and to reconnect with a legacy that spans generations.
