Tarache to remain detained in Colombia awaiting extradition to Peru

09:12 | Lima, Apr. 19.

Venezuelan national Sergio Tarache, accused of pouring gasoline on 18-year-old Katherine Gomez and setting her ablaze in Lima, will remain in pre-trial detention in Colombia while the legal procedures for his extradition to Peru are carried out.

The information was provided by Colombia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which, in turn, confirmed that authorities in both countries agreed that pre-trial detention for extradition purposes was the best alternative to start a process towards ensuring an effective administration of justice in this unfortunate case.

In a statement, the Colombian government agency underlined that Tarache was arrested in Colombian territory on April 12, 2023, based on a red notice from Interpol, at the request of the Republic of Peru.

Last week, Peru's Ministry of Interior (Mininter) confirmed that he had been captured in Colombia.

The Venezuelan national was included in Mininter's Rewards Program, as it announced a reward worth S/50,000 (about US$13,283) to anyone who provided information on his whereabouts. He was captured on April 11 at about 7 p.m. in the town of Barrios Unidos, in the Colombian city of Bogota.

On March 18, Tarache burned Peru's Katherine Gomez alive in an area located close to Plaza Dos de Mayo roundabout in the Peruvian capital Lima.

As a consequence, she was left with burns on 60% of her body and died six days later after a painful agony despite efforts by doctors to save her life.

The woman, who was Tarache's ex-partner, had broken up with him days earlier.
