Spanish King Felipe VI on Tuesday morning arrived in Peru to participate in the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Pedro Castillo.

Upon arrival, the monarch was welcomed by Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Claudia Cornejo.

His visit to the South American nation was announced last Friday by the Royal Household of Spain.

This will be the first time that Felipe VI will take part in a presidential inauguration ceremony in Peru as King of Spain.

As a Prince, he attended Alejandro Toledo's presidential inauguration in 2001 and was even present in the symbolic ceremony held in the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu at that time.

Additionally, the then Prince participated in the inauguration ceremonies of Alan Garcia (2006) and Ollanta Humala (2011).

The ceremony in which Pedro Castillo will take the reins of Peru for the 2021-2026 term is set for Wednesday at the headquarters of Congress of the Republic. This day will also mark the Bicentennial of Peru's Independence.
