School students across the country increased their Reading Comprehension and Mathematics scores, posting the largest improvement in seven years, reported Peru’s Education Ministry (Minedu).
According to the latest Student Census Evaluation (ECE), in 2014, 44% of children attending second grade of primary school exhibited satisfactory performance in the comprehension of texts, while 26% of them reached the same level in mathematics.
That is an estimated 11% increase and 9% increase, respectively, compared to their performance in 2013.
The test took place on November 11 and 12 and assessed 517,000 second graders from public and private education centers.
It is used to keep track of children’s progress made throughout the time and, that is why Minedu provides a personalized report to assessed schools, teachers and parents.
In the case of second grade students from public schools, the increase stood at 10% in the satisfactory level both in reading comprehension and mathematics. As for private schools, the improvements rates were 10% and 6%, respectively.
In urban areas, the performance in reading comprehension and mathematics rose by 11 and 10 percentage points, respectively; while in rural education centers the improvements was 7 percentage points in both cases.
The Education Minister Jaime Saavedra told RPP TV and radio station the 2014 results were due to a number of changes in the way the service has been provided in the past few years.
This had to do with the timely contracts of teachers, the supply of texts and kits to teachers since the very first day of classes, as well as the fact that an increased number of students received pre-school education.
In addition, the School Training Program for Students with Difficulties to Learn was launched in ten regions of the country for the first time ever last year. “Not everyone learns at the same pace, so the teacher has to monitor them until June or July to realize who they are and make sure they are leveled in the second half of the year.”
"I congratulate the commitment and dedication of the principals, teachers, students and parents because they are the main actors in the education reform," he expressed.
