Rains leave 65 dead, 128 injured, 9,423 victims, and over 65,000 affected in Peru

Heavy rains reported in various regions across Peru have so far left 65 dead, 128 injured, 5 missing, 9,423 victims, and more than 65,000 affected, National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) Chief Carlos Yañez said on Sunday.

This information was contained in a detailed report covering January 1 through March 18 this year.

Likewise, the official stated that 1,521 homes are destroyed, 2,148 uninhabitable, and 27,843 affected.

Concerning infrastructure, 45 classrooms are destroyed, 546 affected, and 133 uninhabitable, whereas 5 health establishments are destroyed, 105 damaged, and 10 uninhabitable

Besides, 66.4 kilometers of rural roads are damaged and 7.9 kilometers destroyed, while 178 kilometers of highways are destroyed and 659 kilometers are affected.

The Indeci head reported that 327 kilometers of irrigation channels are affected and 109 kilometers destroyed, while 202 bridges are damaged and other 136 destroyed.

Likewise, 61 kilometers of water network are affected and 19 kilometers destroyed. In addition, 4.8 kilometers of sewage network are damaged and one kilometer is destroyed.

Regarding agriculture and livestock, he pointed out that 25,277 hectares of crops are damaged and 12,138 hectares lost, while 181,029 animals are affected and 29,835 dead.

The official explained that these figures are supplied by the respective authorities to the National Information System for Response and Rehabilitation (SINPAD), but they are updated over the course of hours.

"Let's hope the damage doesn't get any worse," he underlined.
