On the occasion of the 346th anniversary, the city of Puno has been running a series of activities as part of this year’s Grand Parade that brings together locals and representatives of associations, markets, as well as state and private organizations, among others.
Participants are divided into three groups: Traditional costumes, trajes de luces (light suits) and allegorical floats. The parade will kick off on the corner of Lampa and Ilo Streets, and will pass by La Torre Ave, Tacna St., the city’s main square until Mareategui Park.
Monday’s event was led by Puno’s mayor, Javier Humpiri, who was accompanied by town councilors and managers.
According to the organizing committee, headed by Marcos Maldonado, the traditional costumes category’s first place winner will be awarded a S/.3,000 (about US$1,027) cash prize, and the runner-up will receive S/. 2,500 (about US$856)
As for the category of light suits, first and second place prizes will be the same as those mentioned above.
On the other hand, allegorical floats will be participating for exhibition only.
It should be noted a team of four local judges will be in charge of the difficult task of selecting the best costumes.
