PromPeru joins Guardians of Nature to mitigate climate change impact

16:35 | Lima, Dec. 2.

Peru's Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru) has announced that it will join the Guardian of Nature initiative by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) —as part of its commitment to a comprehensive approach to climate change mitigation and promoting sustainable projects.

"80% of the tourism sector is dependent on nature. Thus, it is crucial that Peru take a leading role in preserving the environment so that we can offer our visitors a climate-responsible experience that is consistent with the great challenges of the tourism sector and the planet," said PromPeru Executive-President Amora Carbajal.

According to the WTTC, the travel and tourism sector can stop and reverse the damage caused to the environment.

Trips to natural areas account for 20% of global tourism, contribute US$343 billion to world's economy every year and maintain about 22 million jobs around the globe.

Similarly, the international body said that travel and tourism organizations are obliged to take positive actions to restore the environment, in addition to applying organic solutions in favor of decarbonization to achieve the goal of zero greenhouse gas emissions at global level.

For these reasons, the WTTC has urgently called on governments, as well as the private travel and tourism sector, to make a decisive contribution to slowing down the deterioration of the planet, the loss of biodiversity, and climate change by adopting a Positive Nature approach and becoming part of the Guardian of Nature initiative.

Peru committed to sustainable tourism

PromPeru underscored that it carries out various actions with the aim of consolidating our country as a competitive, sustainable, high-quality, and safe tourist destination, where from a diverse offer —achieved with the participation of stakeholders— tourists can live unique experiences that contribute to Peru's economic and social development.

Among the main activities and achievements, the Amazon Campaign with ATTA and the Sippo study on trends in sustainable tourism in 2019 stand out.

In 2020, Lima joined the Global Destination Sustainability Movement (GDS) ranking and the Alliance with the GDS Movement took place to promote business tourism.

In this sense, PromPeru stressed that in 2021 Machu Picchu became the first carbon neutral destination and Ollantaytambo was recognized by the UNWTO as one of the best tourism villages.

This year, Peru managed to have 9 destinations included into the Top 100 Green Destinations.
