Prime Minister Luis Galarreta stated today that the government is firmly committed to confronting crime. He highlighted progress made in public security during the first 92 days of President Keiko Fujimori’s administration.
“We are going to restore order in Peru. We are 92 days into this administration, and we have already accomplished far more than what was achieved in five years under previous governments. I want to emphasize our clear resolve to confront crime—to deal with these criminals exactly as they should be dealt with,” he affirmed.
In this regard, he explained that the executive branch has requested legislative powers from the Congress of the Republic. The goal is to provide the National Police and the Armed Forces with an appropriate legal framework to carry out their duties, ensuring that personnel who take action against crime do not end up facing constant, protracted legal proceedings.
The El Niño Phenomenon
Galarreta made these remarks during an official visit to the Casitas district in the Tumbes region. In his capacity as the official in charge of the executive branch, he oversaw preventive measures for the El Niño phenomenon (FEN), accompanied by the Minister of Defense, Rafael Belaunde, and the Minister of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, Marco Vinelli.
He noted that the first legislative power to be exercised will be aimed at strengthening the response capacity of the National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI), with the objective of streamlining the procedures for declaring a state of emergency in districts that require it.
Furthermore, he indicated that the government is coordinating the deployment of machinery from various sectors, along with support from the Armed Forces, to mitigate potential damage to infrastructure and agricultural areas—prioritizing, above all, the protection of the population.
The Chief of the Ministerial Cabinet also indicated that he remains in constant communication with President Keiko Fujimori to assess progress regarding public security and actions in response to the El Niño phenomenon.
Furthermore, he assured that campaign commitments and planned infrastructure projects will be carried out. In this regard, he maintained that the needs of the various regions have been identified and are being monitored.
“We have mapped out everything that is needed in each region; this information is held within the office that the President has established to ensure that ministers are consistently held to their duties,” stated Galarreta.
It should be noted that President Fujimori is currently carrying out a work agenda in El Salvador, focused on the exchange of experiences and the strengthening of bilateral cooperation on public security, which includes a meeting with President Nayib Bukele.
