President Vizcarra: I will not resign and will continue working for Peru

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Friday affirmed that he will not step down, adding that he will continue working for the sake of the country because he has a commitment to Peru.

As is known, Congress filed an impeachment motion against the Head of State on Thursday night, which would be debated during a plenary session today.

In response, the President said that his administration has always acted properly and transparently, without transgressing the law, and

there shall not be a plot against democracy.

"Yesterday, three audios were presented, but there are more of them, let everyone listen (to the recordings), let's see how they have created a plot to destabilize the government, institutions and democracy," he emphasized.

In this sense, the Head of State said there are certain characters who do not lose the habit of recording conversations illegally, and they have done it again through some people he used to trust.

"I am not going to resign, I have a commitment to Peru, I will fulfill it until the last day of my term in office (July 28, 2021)," he emphasized after invoking Congress to act responsibly and make decisions putting the country's interest ahead.

After thanking State ministers for their unanimous support, the top official said they have an overloaded work agenda, within the framework of the fight against the new coronavirus.

The statesman added that he will continue working because the objective is to defeat the pandemic, reactivate the economy, and generate jobs in order to leave the current crisis behind.

Mr. Vizcarra also clarified that the audios presented at Congress do not entail an illegal conversation.

Remarks were made during the

President's visit to Cayetano Heredia University's Research Center in order to verify Phase 3 clinical trials of a COVID-19 vaccine developed by Chinese Sinopharm laboratory.
