President Vizcarra confirms 28 coronavirus cases in Peru

09:54 | Piura (Piura region), Mar. 13.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Friday confirmed the detection of six new positive coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in the country, bringing the total number to 28.

Speaking from Piura region, where he monitored works for the improvement of water and sewage services, the Head of State affirmed that positive cases are located mainly in the capital city Lima, and that they are people who have been in contact with the first confirmed cases.

Peru's Health Ministry (Minsa) explained that —after analyzing 983 samples— six new cases have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last few hours.

These cases include a 58-year-old woman, a female citizen aged 37, and a man of 24 years who has been to Spain and London.

The list also includes a 78-year-old man, a woman aged 75 who traveled to Spain, and another of 39. All these cases are under investigation.

The Health Ministry reiterated that the National Health Institute (INS) is the only official and authorized entity for the processing of samples and the delivery of results in Peru.

Minsa is the official source of authorized information on coronavirus in the South American country. Thus, the content circulating in social media and other unofficial networks should not be deemed as true.

The ministry recommends washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; covering nose and mouth with the forearm or a tissue when coughing or sneezing; avoiding eye, nose, and mouth touching with unwashed hands; and avoiding close contact with people who have respiratory illnesses.

Prevention

Minsa recommends that people should take the following preventive measures:

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

• Cover your nose and mouth with your forearm or a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
