The President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, stated on Friday that Peru reaffirms its position as a global leader in sustainable fishing by launching the first 2025 anchoveta fishing season in Callao region, a resource that generates employment and investments in the country.

"Thanks to the collaborative efforts between the Peruvian Sea Institute and the Ministry of Production, today Peru can look to the world with pride, knowing that we are reaffirming our position as a global leader in sustainable fishing," she said.

The Head of State noted that anchoveta is a maritime resource, adding that it also means job creation, increased investment, exports, and development for Peruvian families and coastal regions.

The top official specified that in 2024, the fishing sector grew by 25% and produced more than 4.6 million tons of anchoveta, a result they hope to consolidate this year in order to continue energizing regions, strengthening exports, and contributing significantly to national GDP.

"But there is even more encouraging news: anchoveta fishing in southern Peru has been strongly reactivated. By the end of March, more than 70% of the authorized quota had been unloaded, marking this first season in the south as the best of the last decade," Mrs. Boluarte stated.

This —she said— helps boost the economy of Arequipa, Moquegua, and Tacna, with more than 36 vessels operating actively and processing plants working at full capacity.

"This important recovery not only generates jobs and income, but also demonstrates the enormous productive potential of the country’s south and the importance of continuing to bet on its fishing development. Our government believes in decentralized development, in the power of work," Mrs. Boluarte stated.

In that context, the top official renewed the government's commitment to productive, responsible fishing, which respects the environment, is transparent, and has a human face.

"From this plant, in Callao, one of the key points on the Peruvian coast and a symbol of the effort of its people, we issue a call to all stakeholders: let's continue working together, with honesty and vision, so that Peru continues to grow," she expressed.

When launching the first anchoveta fishing season, the Head of State predicted it will be a success for the country and a great opportunity for thousands of Peruvian families.

The President reiterated that the government acts with responsibility and transparency, and is committed to promoting the sustainable development of fishing, economic growth, and employment.

"We have put Peru back on the global radar with the recovery of the economy and control of inflation, which is the lowest in the region, achievements that many countries recognize," Mrs. Boluarte noted.

"That is why today Peru is on display, so that more and better investments continue to arrive. This makes us foresee a better future," she concluded.
