The
President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Thursday called on Peruvian women to stand together to defend their rights, as well as to work to create more employment opportunities for them all over the country.
Mrs. Boluarte made these remarks during her participation at the First National Meeting of Female Governors and Lieutenant Governors 2023.
According to the Head of State, the struggle of women to realize their rights has not been easy, and there is still a lot to be done on the matter, since there are still few women in leadership positions.
"Women account for 50.3% of the electoral population, but this figure is not reflected at decision-making levels," she underlined.
In this regard, the Peruvian President highlighted that, today, there are 22 female lieutenant governors in Peru, thanks to the Parity Law.
However, she mentioned that only two out of 25 regional governments are led by women, adding that only 102 female provincial and district mayors were elected in the 1,874 municipalities across Peru.
"I call on all Peruvian women to stand together to continue defending our rights, to open up more spaces, to develop inclusive policies, and to work for creating opportunities and bringing hope all over the country," she stated.
Moreover, the country's top official urged Peruvians to work for eradicating all types of violence against women, for outlawing machismo and political harassment, and for ensuring that equality is really achieved and is not just a matter of meeting a gender quota.
