Peru and Ecuador agreed to use technology to safeguard their shared border, Peruvian
stated on Friday afternoon upon concluding the 16th Binational Cabinet and Presidential Meeting in Quito.
"Our borders must be strengthened, and we agreed —at the proposal of President (Daniel) Noboa— to use technology to protect and safeguard our borders," he indicated.
In this regard, the Peruvian Head of State said this does not mean withdrawing the presence of law-enforcement forces, which will carry out complementary work.
"As we work together toward that main objective, we are convinced that we will curb one of the sources of criminality between both countries," he expressed.
In a joint statement, Jeri specified that one of the issues addressed at the meeting was transnational organized crime and illegal mining affecting both countries, which require joint actions along the border.
Following agreements on both issues and commitments made during the Presidential Meeting and the 16th Binational Cabinet, Peru's top official said he was leaving Quito, Ecuador, satisfied.
He also said that during the hours of work shared with his Ecuadorian counterpart, they agreed it was time to elevate bilateral relations between the two nations to a higher level.
After the meeting concluded, both Presidents, accompanied by their State ministers, took part in the Binational Cabinet's official photo.
Later, the two Heads of State attended the changing of the guard ceremony at the Carondelet Presidential Palace, performed by the Granaderos de Tarqui, the official guard of the President of the Republic of Ecuador.
