Peruvian President Ollanta Humala on Saturday highlighted the fact that Peru has displayed the greatest poverty reduction in Latin America, according to ECLAC, despite the political noise resulting from the current electoral campaign.
According to ECLAC's Social Statistics Unit, such progress was possible thanks to higher household incomes and social inclusion; the latter represents the current administration's policy.
"With regard to social policy, the Government has been and is focused on not only consolidating social programs that offer opportunities, but also on providing basic services to reduce poverty and inequality in rural areas [....]," Mr. Humala posted on his Twitter official account.
Between 2001 and 2014, Peru experienced a relevant poverty reduction of 32% percentage points, placing the country in an enviable position at the regional level, ECLAC said.
"Figures indicate a very favorable trend in poverty reduction; in this sense, Peru is in a enviable situation," Officer-in-Charge of the Social Statistics Unit at ECLAC Xavier Mancero affirmed.
