President Humala Tasso awarded the Order of the Sun of Peru to the legal team that defended Peruvian interests in the Peru-Chile maritime dispute at The Hague-based International Court of Justice.
The honor was granted to Alain Pellet, State doctorate in public law (1974 – University of Paris II) and renowned lawyer that heads States’ legal teams at The Hague, whose career and experience was regarded as sufficient qualification to be appointed as Peru’s defender and legal team’s strategist.
Likewise, recognition was given to Tullio Treves, professor at University of Milan and former judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, who had a distinguished participation during the oral proceedings at the Hague Court.
Decoration was also granted to Rodman Bundy, Vaughan Lowe, Sir Michael Wood and geographic and cartographic expert Scott Edmonds.
The Peruvian leader claimed this is a just recognition to the work carried out by a team of professionals who enabled our vindication in history.
“It is quite an honor for this old soldier to get part of our homeland back through a legal battle,” he added.
According to Mr. Humala, the team’s achievements gave Peruvian citizens another reason to be united.
“Thanks for your work in the field of law, diplomacy and cartography, which is a duty for future generations to defend the territory gained,” he pointed out.
The Head of State admitted there was a rapid response from the Peruvian side to comply with the ruling. Moreover, he highlighted that Peru and Chile are now focused on implementing a post-Hague agenda.
