The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Thursday called for an end to confrontation in the country once and for all, noting that it is time to work together to meet the main demands of the population, such as the provision of basic services of drinking water and sewage.

Remarks were made during an inspection of public works to improve the drinking water service in Manantay, in Ucayali region.

The Head of State lamented that some public works have been halted across the country, thus affecting citizens, noting that he hopes Congress will also be on the side of the people and will provide assistance on this matter.

"The clamor of leaders and the population cannot be solved by bureaucratic means. We have to assist them, because they are asking for water, not for an impeachment; they are not asking for anything else. This situation of confrontation has to stop; the population needs to have the essentials," he stressed.

In this regard, the top official remarked that the public works to improve the drinking water and sewage system, in sector 12 of Manantay district, will benefit more than 27,000 citizens.

"We are sure that S/82 million (about US$20.5 million) was not enough for the inhabitants. We must continue to work hard so that the rest of the squatter settlements can enjoy this important liquid," he said.

For this reason, the President called on regional and municipal authorities of the three levels of government to work together in order to address the major problems in Ucayali region.

"These are historical problems, and they have to be solved not only by the central government, or the regional governor and mayor separately, but all together," he pointed out.

Mr. Castillo told citizens that he will coordinate with the region's incoming authorities to visit the provinces of Purus and Atalaya, among others, so as to meet their needs.
