Presidency: Battle of Ayacucho, a milestone that consolidated Peru's independence

09:28 | Lima, Dec. 9.

The Presidency of the Republic highlighted the significance of the Battle of Ayacucho, commemorated today, as a milestone that consolidated the independence of Peru and other countries in the region.

"On a day like today, the Battle of Ayacucho took place — a milestone that consolidated Peru's independence and shaped the course of our region," the Presidential Office stated in a post on the X platform.

"On this date, we also pay tribute to the Peruvian Army, an institution that continues to serve the nation with courage, discipline, and commitment," it added.

As part of the commemoration of this historic day, a ceremony marking the 201st Anniversary of the Battle of Ayacucho and Peruvian Army Day will be held today at the Army Headquarters, located in Lima's San Borja district.

High-ranking State authorities, as well as senior commanders of the Armed Forces, will take part in the event.

The Battle of Ayacucho —fought on December 9, 1824— was a decisive clash that sealed Peru's independence and marked the end of Spanish rule in South America.

It took place on the Pampa de Quinua, 37 kilometers from the city of Ayacucho.

This clash was part of the final campaigns of the Spanish American wars of independence.

The patriot victory in this battle meant the disappearance of the last major royalist army remaining, thereby consolidating the independence of Peru and other South American countries.
