once again expressed his deep affection for Peru. During a meeting with Lambayeque region authorities —whom he received at the Vatican— the Supreme Pontiff emphasized that the South American country holds a special place in his heart.
"Peru is very present in my life. It is a country that impacts the world with its faith, sense of communion, and spirit of friendship. What Peru can offer the world is truly beautiful," he said during the emotional meeting held after the enthronement ceremony, according to Lambayeque Region Government (GORE).
During the special audience with Lambayeque's delegation, led by its Governor Jorge Perez, the Pope enthusiastically exclaimed, "Long live Chiclayo!"
Leo XIV expressed deep gratitude to the Peruvian people for their displays of affection and solidarity, recalling with special fondness his missionary work in Chiclayo, where he had served as bishop for eight years.
From the very beginning, the Pope expressed his affection and closeness to Peru, especially to Chiclayo. In his first words as head of the Catholic Church, Robert Francis Prevost sent a greeting in Spanish addressed to his "beloved Diocese of Chiclayo."
Prevost has held Peruvian nationality since 2015, when he registered with the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec). He has a valid ID card registered in Chiclayo, the northern Peruvian city where he served as bishop.
On November 3, 2014, Pope Francis appointed Robert Prevost as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Chiclayo, elevating him to the dignity of bishop and assigning him the titular see of Sufar.
On November 7, he took canonical possession of the diocese in the presence of Apostolic Nuncio James Patrick Green; he was ordained bishop on December 12, the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, at the cathedral of the diocese; and on November 26, 2015, he officially assumed the role of Bishop of Chiclayo, a position he held until 2023.
Unexpected Election
During the meeting with the Lambayeque authorities, Leo XIV shared a reflection on his unexpected election as the successor to Pope Francis.
"I always hoped his health would improve. I even had the opportunity to visit him when he was discharged from the hospital. I never imagined I would be his successor, but as a spiritual director, one learns to accept God’s will, even when it is not always easy or understood. We must place our lives in His hands," he said humbly.
The Supreme Pontiff also expressed his gratitude to the members of the delegation for accompanying him during this momentous occasion.
"I am very grateful to you all. Some live in Rome, others have come from far away to be here these days. Your presence is very important and valuable to me. Thanks to you and to Peru for so much affection and sacrifice," he emphasized.
During the audience, the Lambayeque governor presented a recognition and gifts on behalf of Lambayeque’s people, who fondly remember the pastoral work of current Pope Leo XIV, appreciating his solidarity, noble heart, and steadfast commitment to the Catholic faith.
The Lambayeque delegation was composed of Regional Councilors Gustavo Espinoza, Yomi Orozco, Sujeily Camacho, and Ricardo Lara, as well as of Pacora District Mayor Jose Luis Sipion.
