Pope Francis' visit to Peru, mainly to the country's eastern Puerto Maldonado city, will help examine the scope of human trafficking in the Inca nation.

Remarks were made by Miguel Huerta, Director General of Democratic Security within the Interior Ministry and Technical Secretary of the Multi-sectoral Commission against Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants.

On July 30 this year, the Pontiff urged greater commitment to fighting human trafficking, which he called "an atrocious scourge" and "a form of modern slavery."

His appeal was made on the occasion of World Day against Trafficking in Persons.

"We think the Pope's presence will bring to light the seriousness of the problem and the need to further coordinate State efforts in order to fight this phenomenon and raise public awareness about this crime," Huerta said.

The Multi-sectoral Commission is conducting a number of actions to curb the activities of human trafficking mafias and prevent more people from falling into their nets, he said.

"The State has taken a set of actions to cope with this scourge […] We are doing our utmost to reach the population and explain to them what human trafficking is. We hope the Pontiff's presence [in Peru] will raise awareness of what this serious human rights violation means," he concluded.
