Pope Francis on Sunday expressed his views on the political and social situation that is affecting Peru and called on the population to maintain the dialogue to find solutions to recent problems.
The Holy Father said he is close to the people of Peru, "who are experiencing a difficult moment of social tension."
"I am accompanying you with prayer and I encourage all parties to find a peaceful solution as soon as possible for the good of the country, especially of the poorest, respecting the rights of everyone and of the institutions," he remarked.
His comments were made before leading the recitation of the Angelus prayer on Palm Sunday.
In recent days, demonstrations have been held in different parts of the country after the rise in prices of essential goods and fuels as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
In addition, differences have arisen between the Executive Branch and Parliament over the approval of bills to alleviate the economic impact of the crisis in Europe.
It must be noted that Government bills seeking exemption from Selective Consumption Tax (ISC) on fuels and from General Sales Tax (IGV) on products included in the basic food basket have been approved by the Legislative Branch.
