Peru has the potential to grow above 5% and move forward towards achieving prosperity and innovation, Peruvian Prime Minister Fernando Zavala said on Wednesday.

In his speech at the Annual Conference of Executives (CADE) 2016, held in Paracas, the high-ranking official remarked his Cabinet is working to bring more prosperity, security and justice to the country.

“We cannot afford to stop public investment again,” he added.

The Prime Minister speech focused on economic recovery, national security, social investment, education and health, as well as on proposals to improve the State.

We need to upgrade the tax system in order to achieve the projected 4.5% economic growth, so we are able to expand by 6% in 2021.

Improving competitiveness

Zavala noted the need to improve the country’s competitiveness. He also claimed the parameter to move towards that target must be the competitiveness level reached by the other Pacific Alliance members.

“Those are the ones we need to outpace. We have to compare ourselves with the countries that did better than us […],” he affirmed.

To Zavala, the existing competitiveness gap originates in the State’s failure to facilitate investment and other weaknesses in that area such as inefficiency, red tape, corruption, among others.
