Peruvian President Ollanta Humala met with his Surinamese counterpart Desire Delano Bouterse just moments before a summit of leaders of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) on Friday.

During their meeting at Paramaribo's Royal Torarica Hotel, the two leaders spoke about the development of bilateral relations since their countries established diplomatic ties in 1978.

Humala also took the opportunity to congratulate Desi Bouterse on assuming his duties as the pro tempore president of Unasur.

Later on Friday, the Peruvian president attended the 7th Summit of Heads of State and Government of Unasur, during which he handed over the rotating presidency of the 12-member group to Suriname for the 2013-2014 period.
