Peruvian Nobel Literature prize-winning author, Mario Vargas Llosa, celebrates today his 80-year-old birthday with a private gathering in Madrid.
The famous writer has received different awards for his prolific literary and essay work. He was also recognized for openly defending liberal thinking, which led him to join the active political arena in the 1980s and to run for President of Peru in 1990.
Vargas Llosa became one of the most notable exponents of the Boom of Latin American literature. He practiced journalism at La Cronica Daily when he was a youngster. He has written 18 novels —his latest work is ‘Five Corners’— as well as plays such as At the foot of the Thames, The Chunga and The Lady of Tacna.
The Peruvian is a controversial celebrity: on the one hand, people question him for his political activism and, on the other hand, he is appreciated for his internationally acclaimed literary talent.
Mario Vargas Llosa was born on March 28th, 1936, in Arequipa, Peru. He was a cadet at the Lima-based Leoncio Prado Military Academy, and besides, he studied Arts at San Marcos University, where he was awarded a Doctor Honoris Causa degree in 2001.
