Peruvian fugitive Gerald Oropeza Lopez (34), allegedly linked to drug trafficking activities, was detained on Saturday at the Las Salinas bay located near the city of Guayaquil (Ecuador) and handed over to Peruvian authorities on Sunday morning.
Oropeza became fugitive from Peruvian justice 4 months ago.
On April 20, a judge had ordered a preliminary arrest for a period of 15 days due to his alleged connections with illegal drug cartels.
After investigations were concluded, a Peruvian Court ordered his arrest on May 22 on the alleged charges of conspiracy to commit drug-trafficking activities.
Fugitive
He was not reachable ever since. Oropeza's
activities in Ecuador were being closely monitored by
three members of the Peruvian police. Afterwards, arrangements were made
with the local police for the corresponding detention. Thus, he was arrested.
On Sunday, one of Peru’s most wanted people was handed over by Deputy Minister of
Interior of Ecuador Diego Fuentes Acosta to the Peruvian Minister of Interior Luis
Perez Guadalupe at both nations' border.
Guadalupe thanked the Ecuadorian government and underlined the work undertaken by both countries’ police units.
