In order to enhance bilateral trade with Greece, which in 2023 amounted to US$41.3 million (exports and imports), the Peruvian Exporters Association (Adex) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Helexpo —an entity for organizing exhibitions, congresses, and cultural events in the European country.

In 2023, the Hellenic nation ranked 68th in the ranking of destinations for Peruvian products, which was led by China, the United States, Canada, India, and South Korea.

Said shipments (to Greece) amounted to US$13.841 million and represented only 0.02% of the total.

Adex Chairman Julio Perez Alvan remarked that the signing of this document is the first of a series of activities that will seek to promote mutual cooperation and international positioning of companies at fairs and other events.

Two of them are Expoalimentaria, to be held in Peru from September 25 to 27 at Jockey Convention Center in Lima, as well as the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) in Greece, with the aim of further diversifying national supply markets by adding others from Central Europe and the Balkans.

"Exports to this destination have seen steady growth since 2020, with unroasted or decaffeinated coffee, frozen squid, fungicides based on copper compounds, quinoa, and cacao butter being especially noteworthy," the Adex chairman pointed out.

On the other hand, he added, Peru imported Greek products worth US$27.4 million in 2023, the most noteworthy being canned peaches, bentonite, as well as beauty and skin care preparations.

Likewise, Perez Alvan highlighted the work of the public-private sector in the organization of the Freddo Lovers event, last January, which promoted the export of special coffee produced by small-scale farmers from La Convencion, Chanchamayo, Rio Tambo, and San Ignacio.

"Now, Adex and Helexpo have the responsibility in their hands, which is to further contribute to the commercial promotion of the existing supply. The signed document is the beginning of a fruitful collaboration that will allow us to show the goods and services of Peru and Greece," he noted.

In turn, Greek Ambassador to Peru Eleni Lianidou and Helexpo's President Anastasios Tzikas highlighted the potential of both countries and agreed that the signed memorandum will allow them to strengthen and make the most of existing opportunities.
