Peruvian among top 50 finalists for Global Teacher Prize 2021

Peru's Aleida Leyva has been named among the top 50 finalists for the Global Teacher Prize 2021, in recognition of her innovative history and geography teaching projects, Education Minister Juan Cadillo has reported.

According to Cadillo —who received the same honor in 2017— this is also a recognition to Peruvian education and confirms the innovative capacity of Peruvian teachers, as well as the dedication and effort they put day after day to overcome the obstacles around them.

Leyva teaches historical social sciences and philosophy at ADEU —a private school in Lambayeque region, northern Peru— and has more than 10 years of experience leading innovative projects with information and communication technologies (ICT).

In 2011, her ICT project Arenas del Tiempo (Sands of Time) won the EducaRed International Award. Such project was geared towards recovering the wealth of the Mochica cultural heritage in students and shaping their own identity to seek sustainable development opportunities, in which the preservation of the past plays a key role.

In her projects, Leyva uses game-based techniques to address problems, motivate learning, change behaviors, and reduce school dropout rates.

"Education is based on our teachers' capacities and preparation, and this recognition to Ms. Leyva will serve as an inspiration to teachers all over the country," Cadillo remarked.

For her part, the Peruvian teacher indicated that she receives this recognition "on behalf of a large community of educators who try hard, innovate, and develop proposals to improve educational standards day after day."

"I also receive it on behalf of our students, as every effort seeks to improve their learning," the Global Teacher Prize finalist said.

"In addition, I share this day of happiness with our country, because in recent years —despite adversities and limitations that teachers have to face— we have been able to pull ourselves together and do our best in our education," she added.

Global Teacher Prize

The Global Teacher Prize was created to recognize one exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession, as well as to shine a spotlight on the important role that teachers play in society.

By unearthing thousands of stories of heroes that have transformed young people's lives, the prize hopes to bring to life the exceptional work of millions of teachers all over the world.

The finalists shortlisted for the Global Teacher Prize 2021 were selected from over 8,000 nominations and applications from 121 countries around the world.
