Peruvian Ambassador presents credentials to WTO Director-General

10:15 | Geneva (Switzerland), Mar. 5.

Peruvian Ambassador Silvia Alfaro Espinosa has presented credential letters to World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Roberto Azevedo, the Inca country's Foreign Affairs Ministry informed.

Such credentials recognize the appointment of Alfaro as Permanent Representative of Peru to said international organization.

The diplomat stressed the importance given by Peru to the multilateral trade system and the key role played by the WTO in the consolidation of a stable trade system.

She also noted the fact that the WTO should promote the economic development of all its members and preserve special and differential treatment for developing countries, as in the case of Peru —a preferential treatment that has been a constant since the establishment of the WTO.

The Peruvian envoy expressed she expects negotiations on fishery subsidies will successfully conclude by December this year.

She also underscored the Andean nation's commitment to supporting ongoing efforts in other areas of the organization's agenda, such as those associated with reestablishing full operation of the WTO Appellate Body.

For his part, Azevedo acknowledged Peru's efforts to contribute to the WTO agenda, in particular to the subject of fishery subsidies.

He said the WTO is working hard and steadily with the organization's members in order to find viable solutions to the crisis affecting its dispute settlement system.
