Governor of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCR) Julio Velarde has received three awards as best central banker within the framework of the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WBG) held in Washington D.C., United States.

Prizes were granted by global finance magazines Global Markets (formerly known as EmergingMarkets), LatinFinance and Global Finance, in recognition to his achievement at BCR and for Peru’s solid economy.

Global Markets awarded him the region’s best central banker award 2016.

Previously, Velarde won LatinFinance’s Central Bank Governor of the Year Award —based on the opinion of economists and financial experts— that rewards his strong management as governor of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCR).

A story by Global Markets notes the way Velarde exemplifies the stability orientation of a central bank.

Head of Latin America FI & Macro Strategy at BBVA Alvaro Vivanco said: “Politically speaking, Peru has a history of instability, but there is a high level of confidence on the monetary side.”

On the other hand, Global Finance magazine named the head of Peru’s Central Bank as one of the World’s Best Central Bankers of the year.

The prize grades the central bank governors on an “A” to “F” scale for success in areas such as inflation control, economic growth goals, currency stability and interest rate management.
