The head of the
National Superintendence for the Control of Security Services, Arms, Ammunition and Explosives for Civilian Use (Sucamec), Teofilo Mariño, has received the Technical Mission of the
Organization of American States (OAS).
The aim is to strengthen international cooperation to prevent violence involving firearms and reduce the trafficking of weapons in the region.
During his participation, Mariño appreciated the presence of the mission's members in Peru and thanked the technical assistance materialized in training for his staff.
Moreover, the national superintendent reported that, by the end of 2023, Sucamec plans to destroy more than 15,000 firearms, which will be added to the 6,791 pieces that were melted down in March this year in Chimbote (Ancash region).
It should be pointed out that the smelting process is conducted as part of the current government policy to face citizen insecurity and preserve domestic order.
"We are working tenaciously to recover firearms from the streets. For this reason, our 4 intendancies and 9 zonal directorates deployed at the national level have decentralized processes to disable the weapons that we have recovered during control and inspection operations, which will later be founded with the support of the private sector," he remarked.
For his part,
OAS Secretary for Multidimensional Security Ivan Marques congratulated Sucamec for having established said number of weapons for final destination, which will prevent them from returning to the streets to be used in illegal activity, as well as their
diversion to the black market.
"The challenge of firearms in our region is tremendous. This cannot be solved in two or three weeks, it will take years and years of hard work," he noted.
"From my experience at the OAS, I can say that what Sucamec is doing is impressive, not only in terms of regulation of firearms, but also in relation to its operational plans," Marques added.
