On the occasion of International Workers' Day, Peru's Prime Minister Anibal Torres on Sunday affirmed that the Executive Branch's duty is to restore the workforce in the country.

"Labor rights were ensured by social struggles of organized workers, not by registry offices or by governments that abandoned them," he wrote on Twitter.

"The Executive Branch's duty is to restore the workforce in the country. Happy Workers' Day!" the Cabinet chief said.

The International Workers' Day celebration commemorates the fight of Chicago (U.S.) workers who, on May 1, 1886, went on strike demanding an eight-hour workday.

On Sunday, the President of the Republic Pedro Castillo held a meeting with the General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP) to commemorate this day.
